November 29, 2007. Luang Prabang International Airport departure lounge.

(notes from my journal)

We loved Lao! The people here are innocent, mild and simple. Except the sellers at the night market, they’re hard to bargain with and tough, yet never rude :)

Life is slow and people did not seem in a “rush” here. Even the tuk-tuk drivers were always very mild and not pushy. In fact, we loved the way they asked us on the streets: “took took?”. Wherever we went, a smile was returned with an even broader one – and it was genuine (Isn’t it amazing how a smile, even one without reason, but just to acknowledge another person can bring so much joy!).

The country is beautiful. Lush green forests, mighty rivers, beautiful waterfalls, picturesque wats, sleepy towns, it almost feels like a dreamland.

The food was excellent. Lao food is not as heavy on curry as Thai food is and the flavors are more subtle. But it can get as spicy as you like: Perfect! And how could you beat those baguette sandwiches: Fresh bread, cheese, mayonnaise and veggies! Top it all off with a fresh fruit shake. Life is good!

By far, Luang Prabang is our favorite place in the world to relax. We definitely want to return someday and explore more of this country and interact with the wonderful people there!
